ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque is warning residents to be careful about what they put in their trash after two fires in garbage trucks this week.

The city’s Solid Waste Department said the first fire happened on Wednesday on Academy Parkway, with the second one breaking out on Thursday near Acoma. They said the potential for these kinds of fires is greater as we see record-high temperatures and trash gets compacted in trucks.
“But it’s always moving so you got that friction with it and you got it compacting as well so it’s pushing against each other so it’s heating up in there and so when we have it already hot outside and enters already hot and now we’re heating up inside the truck it just increases that potential for a possible chemical reaction,” said Alex Bukoski, Public Information Officer for the City of Albuquerque’s Solid Waste Management Department…
