Storms on Thursday afternoon produced all types of springtime weather in the middle of summer. People reported wind damage, 2-inch hail, and heavy rain. There were also several reports of mammatus clouds and scud clouds!
Scud clouds can look scary and ominous, but are completely harmless. They are sometimes mistaken for funnel clouds or developing tornadoes. However, scud clouds don’t rotate. While they do jut out from under the cloud base, there’s nothing to worry about because there’s no rotation.
Mammatus clouds are more common in the spring than in the summer because they are synonymous with severe weather. The Ozarks did experience some severe thunderstorms on Thursday, and storms did produce mammatus clouds…
