MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A golf tournament fundraiser benefiting cancer charities was hosted by the Myrtle Beach Fire Department Saturday.
It originally began as a fundraiser for the Red Cross. After the fire department lost one of its own to cancer, the event was renamed the Rhonda Brown Memorial Golf Tournament in her honor.
A cause that hits close to home
Captain Jonathan Evans said the fundraiser gives the department a way to support a cause that affects many people personally.
“Someone knows somebody that is going through a cancer battle or most likely will,” Evans said. “So, it’s definitely something that hits home for us. She was like a second mother to many of our firefighters who are coming in who were not from here. So she was very special to us. We just continue to try and do this in her honor to help raise money to help others going through that battle.”…
