In 1967, a church-led protest blocked what would have been Worcester’s first Burger King restaurant.
Plans were being drawn up for the chain to build on a lot at 106 Chandler St., near the old Chandler Street Elementary School and what was then St. Andrew’s Methodist Church, 100 Chandler St.
The owner of the lot had been granted a permit by the city Board of Appeals, prompting the church to bring its opposition to court. A judge sided with St. Andrew’s, ruling that the permit “does not promote the health, convenience, morals or welfare of the community…”…
