North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho resigns, City confirms

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — North Charleston Police Chief Ron Camacho resigned Monday, City officials have confirmed to ABC News 4. Assistant Chief of Police Scott Perry has been confirmed to be taking over Camacho’s role as Chief of Police.

Camacho was sworn in on Dec. 9, 2024. Formerly the chief of police in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, Camacho was picked from a field of 34 candidates to lead the police force of South Carolina’s third-largest city by population and replace former chief Greg Gomes, who retired just 14 months after replacing former chief Reggie Burgess, who was elected mayor in Nov. 2023. He was the first Hispanic chief in the department’s history.

During his tenure, Camacho oversaw his department’s implementation of the CrimeWatch app and platform in an attempt to more directly connect with the community, and often stated his desire to increase transparency…
