1864 — Civil War fighting and scouting intensified across Arkansas. Union troops fought bushwhackers near DeValls Bluff while protecting railroad and hay-cutting operations. That same day, Federal commanders dispatched scouts east and northeast from Lewisburg, troops continued a campaign in Yell County, and 75 men of the 60th U.S. Colored Troops left Helena for Kent’s Landing. A Federal patrol also attacked bushwhackers near Van Buren during the night of August 11.
1866 — A post–Civil War treaty reshaped Cherokee relations with the United States. The Treaty with the Cherokee was proclaimed August 11, 1866.
