City reviews potential updates to City Code pertaining to trash and recycling services

The City of Springfield is reviewing proposed updates to Chapter 94 of the City Code, which governs trash and recycling services, with the goal of creating a clearer, more consistent and more effective system for residents and service providers. Much of the code has not been significantly updated in years, resulting in inconsistent service, outdated requirements and challenges for both residents and haulers.

The review is part of a broader effort to improve Springfield’s Integrated Solid Waste Management System and prepare for future needs. A recent waste audit found that more than 40% of the material sent to the Noble Hill Sanitary Landfill could have been recycled, while landfill use continues to increase.
