AMC Faces Ticketing Glitches Amid High Demand for “Dune: Part Three” Release

AMC Theatres encountered significant technical difficulties on Tuesday as ticket sales for “Dune: Part Three” overwhelmed its online platforms. The surge in demand caused slowdowns and glitches, frustrating many eager fans attempting to secure seats for the film’s premium IMAX 70mm showings.

AMC CEO Adam Aron addressed the issue on X, acknowledging that ticketing traffic was roughly three times higher than during previous major releases, including the recent Spider-Man and The Odyssey launches. “We thought we were ready, but we weren’t,” Aron admitted, calling the disruptions “intolerable and inexcusable.”

The theater chain is now directing its IT team to take swift action to reinforce its ticketing infrastructure, ensuring that systems can handle such high volumes moving forward. This comes after an initial ticket release in April sold out rapidly, leaving many fans disappointed.

The frenzy surrounding “Dune: Part Three” mirrors earlier incidents this year when “The Odyssey” prompted similar ticketing challenges, including platform crashes and inflated resale prices reaching up to $600. On Tuesday, fans camped outside New York City’s AMC Lincoln Square 13-home to the nation’s largest IMAX and a sought-after venue for 70mm screenings-forming lines around the block as anticipation for the film builds.

Resale of tickets continues to be a contentious issue, with scalpers listing passes at exorbitant prices shortly after they become available. Despite ongoing criticism from artists, studios, and regulatory bodies, resellers remain influential within the entertainment ticket market.

“Dune: Part Three” features Timothée Chalamet returning as Paul Atreides, with a star-studded cast including Zendaya, Florence Pugh, Robert Pattinson, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Anya Taylor-Joy. The film delves into the aftermath of Atreides’ ascent to power, further captivating the franchise’s devoted fanbase.

AMC’s experience underscores the challenges theaters face in accommodating surges in online ticket demand, especially for blockbuster releases with premium viewing formats. The company’s commitment to resolving these issues aims to improve the ticket-buying experience as excitement continues to build for the next chapter in the “Dune” saga.
