A man convicted of holding a leadership role in a drug trafficking conspiracy has been sentenced to 35 years in federal prison, in a case tied to a nationwide crackdown on cartel operations announced Tuesday. The sentencing was announced by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, based in San Antonio.
The case was brought under Operation Take Back America, according to the U.S. Attorney WDTX, the office’s official account, which described the defendant as having held a leadership role in the drug trafficking enterprise. The sentencing was also tied to Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio, an agency directly associated with the operation. A Nationwide Crackdown Rooted in Executive Order
Operation Take Back America is a nationwide enforcement initiative the Department of Justice established in March 2025, directing federal prosecutors and law enforcement to target drug cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and immigration-related offenses. The initiative pools resources from Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces and Project Safe Neighborhoods, and it gained further legal footing when President Donald Trump issued Executive Order 14159, Protecting the American People Against Invasion, which mandated the creation of joint Homeland Security Task Forces between the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security.
Locally, that mandate took shape in November 2025, when the FBI San Antonio Field Office and Homeland Security Investigations San Antonio formally launched Homeland Security Task Force South Texas, according to the San Antonio Report. The task force brings together federal and local partners, including the San Antonio Police Department and Texas DPS, to coordinate operations against cartels, foreign gangs, and drug trafficking rings across the region.
A Massive Judicial District Under Pressure
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, led by U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons, spans 68 counties across nearly 93,000 square miles, encompassing San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso alongside 660 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, according to the Department of Justice.
