Lincoln Public Schools is beginning the 2026–27 school year with enrollment near 42,000 students, its teaching positions largely filled, and new efforts underway to address special-education staffing, chronic absenteeism, and the use of artificial intelligence.
LPS Superintendent Dr. John Skretta discussed the district’s priorities Wednesday during an interview on KLIN’s “Drive Time Lincoln.” The district opened the year with a transition day for kindergartners, sixth graders and ninth graders. All other K-12 students return Thursday, Aug. 13.
