A Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department officer was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after two patrol vehicles collided on northbound Interstate 11 near Sunset Road on Friday morning, disrupting the funeral procession for slain Officer Austin “Zade” Abdelnabi as it made its way toward services in Henderson.
The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. as the motorcade escorting Abdelnabi’s body traveled toward Central Church, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Metro confirmed that two of its own vehicles were involved in the collision, and the injured officer was taken to a hospital. The crash was still under investigation Friday morning, per the newspaper’s report.
The Nevada Highway Patrol’s incident report system listed the collision as occurring at 10:20 a.m. on northbound I-11 before Sunset Road, and state troopers are handling the investigation, the same report notes. Nevada Highway Patrol is the agency responsible for reviewing traffic incidents on interstates within Clark County.
A Procession Miles in the Making
The funeral procession had departed Palm Mortuary on South Jones Boulevard at 9 a.m. Friday, tracing a public route along Interstate 15, the Las Vegas Strip, and Interstate 215 before turning north on Interstate 11 toward Henderson, according to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
