Family of man fatally shot by Akron police officer files $10 million lawsuit

AKRON, Ohio — The family of a man who was fatally shot by an Akron police officer while sitting in a U-Haul sued the city Monday, seeking $10 million in damages.

In 2024, Akron police officer Michael Novak killed 54-year-old Michael Jones.

The excessive force and wrongful death lawsuit, filed in federal court in Akron, accuses Novak of shooting Jones without any indication that he had committed a crime, was armed or posed a threat. The lawsuit also says the officers never explained why they approached Jones in the first place…
