Intense afternoon heat could fuel strong, isolated storms

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – This afternoon is serving up that classic mid August triple threat of hot, humid, and oppressive weather across southeast Louisiana and south Mississippi. The intense heat is locked in today, pushing afternoon “feels like” temperatures to a dangerous 110 to 113 degrees. An Extreme Heat Warning is active through 8 PM for the New Orleans metro, southeast Louisiana parishes, and coastal Mississippi, while a Heat Advisory blankets the rest of our local area. Make sure you are drinking plenty of water, staying in the air conditioning when you can, and keeping the Fox 8 weather app close by to track any changes.

Only isolated to scattered afternoon storms are expected to pop up today, with the highest chances targeting the Mississippi coast and eastern areas. Because of the intense heat energy in place, these storms will not have much competition to hold them back. That means any single cell that manages to develop could quickly go rogue, bringing the threat of damaging winds and heavy downpours. If you get caught under one of these storms, you will get some temporary cooling relief, but otherwise expect to sweat it out…
