Freddie Jackson, the celebrated R&B vocalist known for timeless hits such as “You Are My Lady” and “Rock Me Tonight (For Old Times Sake),” has passed away at the age of 69.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday, October 6, via a statement posted on his official Instagram account, revealing that he died the previous evening, October 5. At this time, the cause of death has not been disclosed.
The announcement expressed deep sorrow: “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Freddie Jackson.” It also highlighted his love for his fans, family, friends, and music. Jackson passed away just three days after celebrating his 69th birthday.
Jackson’s breakout 1985 album, Rock Me Tonight, included the title track which dominated the Billboard R&B chart for six weeks. The album also featured “You Are My Lady,” a signature ballad that crossed over to the pop charts, peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself achieved No. 1 on the R&B albums chart and earned platinum status.
His follow-up album, Just Like the First Time (1986), also went platinum and produced several R&B chart-toppers, including “Tasty Love,” “Have You Ever Loved Somebody,” and “Jam Tonight.” Additionally, his duet with Melba Moore, “A Little Bit More,” reached No. 1.
Born Frederick Anthony Jackson in Harlem, New York, he began his musical journey in the late 1970s with the California-based funk group Mystic Merlin before embarking on a successful solo career.
Jackson remained active in music throughout his life, releasing albums as recently as Love Signals in 2018 and My First Love in 2023. He was still performing live as recently as September of this year.
Earlier in 2024, Jackson publicly shared his battle with kidney disease. In a heartfelt video, he said, “After a lot of thought and reflection, I’ve come to a point where I feel I’m ready to talk about a recent chapter in my life.
I have been diagnosed with kidney disease. This journey has had its challenges, but I’ve decided to face it with openness and resilience.
It’s important to me that I share this with you, not just as a part of my personal story, but as a way to make a positive difference.” Whether this illness was connected to his passing remains unknown.
Freddie Jackson’s smooth voice and memorable melodies left an indelible mark on R&B music, and his legacy will continue to resonate with fans around the world.
