Birmingham airport approves major runway rebuild, new parking guidance system

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Travelers flying through Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport will see changes in the coming years from the moment they look for a parking space to the time their plane reaches the runway.

The Birmingham Airport Authority Board on Tuesday moved forward with a series of infrastructure, passenger-experience and security projects, including a roughly $19 million reconstruction of part of Runway 24 and a new parking guidance system expected to cost up to about $4.9 million with contingencies.

Airport leaders say the parking technology will be among the most noticeable changes for passengers, while their goal is for travelers to experience as little disruption as possible from the much larger runway project…
