Hospital violence and threats rise nationwide, security expert warns

MURRAY, Utah (KUTV) — A deadly fight that investigators say escalated into gunfire prompted a major law enforcement response and a temporary lockdown at Intermountain Medical Center as officers worked to prevent any additional violence from reaching the hospital.

Investigators say Afuhia Manatau pulled a gun during a fight and his son took it and allegedly opened fire, killing one person and critically injuring another. Police say the teen was also shot during the struggle and remains in critical condition. Manatau is in jail, charged with murder and felony discharge of a firearm and the case remains under investigation.

The shooting led to a large police presence at Intermountain Medical Center in Murray including SWAT and other agencies, as officers tried to determine whether there was an ongoing threat. Unified Police Department Assistant Chief Justin Hoyal said officers initially did not know who the suspect was.
