Ring Doorbell Footage Shows Teen Compliant as Officer Shouts Profanities at Him
A 14-year-old boy knelt on his own front porch, hands raised, telling officers he was a kid and hadn’t done anything wrong. One officer told him he didn’t care. Then they handcuffed him. The 21-second Ring doorbell camera footage, shared on X by @kevinblue345, has gained over 761,000 views. Also, it has sparked criticism of the officer’s language and the decision to detain a compliant juvenile.
The incident occurred August 17 in the 700 block of Highland Road NE in Canton, Ohio. Police were searching for multiple suspects in a series of vehicle thefts involving Kia and Hyundai cars. A K-9 unit had tracked a scent to the area. Officers encountered the 14-year-old on his porch as he was exiting his home and handcuffed him before determining he was not involved. The actual suspect was found nearby.
A Knock That Became a Handcuffing
The Ring footage shows the youth already positioned on the porch, kneeling with both hands raised and open. His backpack remains on his back. An officer’s voice commands: “Put your hands up, put your […] hands up.” The youth responds immediately: “I didn’t do nothing. I’m a kid.” He repeats variations of his innocence while remaining in the kneeling position with hands elevated.
