Snowplows in August at Kansas City downtown airport? What the hail

Snow crews had to leap into action early Wednesday at the Kansas City Downtown Airport – Wheeler Field after thunderstorms pelted the airport and covered it taxiways with several inches of hail.

“Who would have though our snow crews would have to do snow removal in August?” the airport posted on Facebook. “This morning’s storms covered some of our taxiways with up to 3” of hail.”

The airport posted a handful of photos showing the aftermath of the storms.

A utility pole also was destroyed in the storms, knocking out power to parts of the airport. The airport said Evergy crews were working to restore. Without electricity, though, the 100LL self-service fuel tank was out of service until power was restored…
