Local hero killed in Vietnam to be honored this month

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The LeRoy community is preparing to honor a local hero nearly 60 years since he was killed during an ambush in Vietnam.

In 1968, Lt. Gary Scott gave his life while trying to rescue members of his platoon as they were pinned down by enemy fire. On Thursday, August 27, a portion of Route 19 will be renamed after him.

Kathy Damann, Scott’s cousin and chair of the Gary Scott Scholarship Committee, stopped by our Sunrise studio. She was joined by Carson Caton, this year’s winner of the scholarship.

They spoke to Sunrise anchor Brennan Somers about carrying on Scott’s legacy, what his life means to the LeRoy community, and ways to give back to the scholarship fund to keep the cause going for many years to come…
