Central Florida’s only indoor Renaissance fair is back this weekend, bringing sword fights, mermaid encounters and turkey legs into an air-conditioned exhibition hall in Kissimmee. The Magik and Mythk Festival returns to Osceola Heritage Park for its second year on Saturday, running from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1901 Chief Osceola Trail.
The festival was created by Adam DeLancett and Whitney Hayes, who also co-own the Winter Park oddities shop Prometheus Esoterica, as an indoor renaissance fair returning to Osceola Heritage Park for its second year, according to the Orlando Sentinel. DeLancett told the paper the event lets attendees wear armor, costumes and dresses indoors in Florida, sidestepping the heat that keeps most Renaissance fairs confined to winter. He pointed out that Florida has 12 Renaissance shows in January and none during the rest of the year, a gap the festival is designed to fill.
That scheduling logic tracks with the broader Florida fair circuit: major outdoor events like the Bay Area Renaissance Festival in Dade City and the Florida Renaissance Festival in Deerfield Beach operate exclusively during the winter and early spring months, from February to March. Summer heat and rain effectively shut outdoor fairs down the rest of the year, which is part of why an August event staged inside a climate-controlled hall fills a real seasonal gap for costume and medieval-culture fans in the region.
Sword Fights, Mermaids and a Fairy Garden
The festival packs in sword-fighting demonstrations, costume contests, live musicians, mermaids, fairies and photo opportunities, per the Sentinel’s rundown. Crossroad Swords will demonstrate medieval fencing and armored sword combat, while Mythic Adventures Live Action Role Playing showcases combat and storytelling for attendees. Other scheduled acts include Birds and Exotics of the World, Pirates Dinner Adventure, Wild Garden Bellydance and Macsilver’s Irish Pirates…
