Exclusive: Western PA region sets new record for confirmed tornadoes

It’s now official: 2026 is a record-setting year for tornadoes in the region served by the National Weather Service Forecast Office for the Pittsburgh region, including parts of southeastern Ohio, northern West Virginia and western Pennsylvania.

Two tornadoes that occurred during severe weather on Aug. 16 in Beaver and Armstrong counties have now been confirmed by the National Weather Service in Moon Township as the region’s 29th and 30th tornadoes for the 2026 calendar year, breaking the region’s previous record of 29 tornadoes set in 2024, according to an Aug. 19 announcement posted on social media by the Pittsburgh NWS.
