Growth vs. neighborhood character: Nashville residents turn to zoning protections

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — As growth and development continue around the Madison, Goodlettsville, and RiverGate area, some longtime residents are turning to zoning protections to help preserve the look and feel of their neighborhoods.

Metro Council this week approved contextual overlays for the Twin Hills and Shepherd Hills area and the Cumberland and North Hills area.

A contextual overlay adds additional standards intended to help new construction better fit the existing development pattern of a neighborhood. Those rules can address things such as the height of new homes, how far they sit from the street, and how much of a lot a home can cover…
