Not a Bird, Not a Plane: Superman? Man Confesses to Boat Burglary in Costume

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a nearby burglary. A boat owner reported that someone had broken into their cabin and stolen multiple power tools. There was little to no information for the deputies to go on, aside from which tools the thief had made off with. Most of the tools were typically boat-related stuff, including wrenches, though they cost a pretty penny.

It didn’t take long for the deputies to track down the alleged robber as 57-year-old James Tidwell. While finding the alleged culprit of any crime isn’t anything new, it’s what he was wearing that makes this story so odd. The alleged robber was dressed as Superman, the Man of Steel.

Bodycam footage released by the sheriff shows the encounter. In it, Tidwell admits to the theft on camera, resulting in him getting arrested on the spot. He admits to going on the boat and taking three items without permission. While he doesn’t mention which items he took, the admission of guilt is more than enough for the officers to arrest him for burglary of an unoccupied conveyance and petit theft in the first degree.

Not Exactly a Beacon of Hope

Oddly enough, Tidwell seemed to cooperate with the authorities when they questioned him about the burglary. He immediately confessed that he didn’t have any weapon on him, and he didn’t resist arrest at all.

This all leads many commenters to believe that maybe he didn’t know he had committed a major crime. An example of this is how he stated that he “only” took three items, suggesting that he thought of it as a small thing…
