Rankin County school desegregation order ends after nearly 60 years

RICHLAND, Miss. (WLBT) – The Rankin County School District is no longer under federal court supervision after a judge ruled the district has eliminated racial discrimination, ending a desegregation order that dates back nearly 60 years.

The Rankin County NAACP and the Legal Defense Fund held a town hall Thursday night at Mt. Sania Baptist Church in Richland to explain what the ruling means.

Case dates back to 1967

The case, Adams v. Rankin County Board of Education, dates back to 1967, when Black parents and students sued the district over separate and unequal schools.
