Immigrant arrests increase in the New Orleans metropolitan area

Immigrant arrests in the New Orleans metropolitan area have been on the rise as a result of collaboration between local law enforcement and Immigration and customs enforcement.

Cities outside of New Orleans such as Kenner, Metairie, and Jefferson have become hot spots for immigrant arrests due to previous partnerships made with local police departments. These partnerships include the 287(g) program, which gives police departments certain authorities, such as detainment, that are given to ICE as well as delegation from ICE.

Kenner, a city about 20 minutes outside of New Orleans with a high immigrant population is a part of the 287(g) program, resulting in a particularly high arrest rate. Despite this partnership dating back to just last year in April of 2025, the effects have become evident in recent months…
