SFPD helps make arrest in Redwood City ‘AppleCare’ elderly fraud scam

(KRON) — The Redwood City Police Department said the San Francisco Police Department helped arrest a Fresno man accused of targeting an elderly person in a fraud scheme where the suspect posed as an AppleCare representative.

“The victim reported receiving messages on her iPhone claiming that “AppleCare” had detected suspicious activity associated with her phone,” RCPD said. “The victim subsequently spoke with individuals posing as AppleCare support representatives, who told her there were fraudulent charges associated with her bank account. The suspects instructed the victim to withdraw cash from her account and provide it to a ‘courier’ who would come to her residence to collect the money.”

After the victim reached out to them, RCPD said “investigators coordinated further communication with the suspects and developed a plan to identify and apprehend the courier if one arrived.”…
