Civil rights anniversary event seeks to gather people born during a defining year

It has been 63 years since the activities, violence and deaths of 1963 made Birmingham the epicenter of the American Civil Rights Movement.

Community leaders are seeking a new way to commemorate the anniversary of that seminal year by inviting Birmingham City Schools alumni who were born in 1963 to participate in a gathering in the city’s Civil Rights District.

The community gathering will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute and Kelly Ingram Park. Organizers said the commemoration of the lives of people born during the pivotal year will offer opportunities for storytelling, reflection and fellowship, while also honoring the sacrifices of the people who help transform the city, the region and the country…
