Fifty-five years ago today, on August 23, 1971, the Bee Gees reached a major milestone in their career when “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” claimed the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Released in May as the lead single from their album Trafalgar, this soft rock ballad marked the group’s first No. 1 hit in the United States. Billboard would later name it the fifth biggest song of 1971.
The path to this success wasn’t without its challenges. In 1969, Robin Gibb had left the band amid disagreements about who should take the lead vocals.
Barry and Maurice continued briefly as a duo before the group disbanded altogether. By 1970, the brothers had reunited, and Barry and Robin co-wrote “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart” during one of their early sessions back together.
Reflecting on those times, Barry Gibb noted, “Before we ever became famous were the best times of our lives. There was no competition; it didn’t matter who sang what.”
This sense of reconciliation is woven into the song’s heartfelt lyrics, which explore themes of loneliness, regret, and the painful process of understanding a relationship’s end. The Bee Gees’ signature harmonies and restrained vocals lend a tender, poignant quality to the track.
Interestingly, the song was originally written with singer Andy Williams in mind. Though the Bee Gees ultimately recorded it themselves, Williams included his own smooth rendition on his 1971 album You’ve Got a Friend, demonstrating the versatility of the Gibb brothers’ songwriting across both soft rock and traditional pop genres.
The track also earned the Bee Gees a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Over the course of their career, they would go on to win five Grammys, achieve nine No. 1 hits, and be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.
