UMBARGER – A small community near Canyon holds the history of many who settled into the Texas Panhandle in the 1900s and beyond, and some of its buildings are still standing today.
The historic Umbarger Schoolhouse, where many students learned their ABCs over the years and which carries the history of the settlement from the 1900s, was recently sold by Randall County. It was a brick building and contained many school rooms, depending on the populations and how many students were attending.
The old Umbarger public school district was established in 1904, but it consolidated its operations with the Canyon Independent School District in 1964. The school was closed, and students were rerouted into CISD schools, according to Texas Historical Society and eventually the schoolhouse became property of Randall County…
