To ensure that the Christian County Weather Spotters remain a source of information during severe weather events, the City of Hopkinsville presented the organization with a $50,000 check for a new generator on Tuesday.
Hopkinsville Mayor J.R. Knight says the weather spotters are a key resource because they provide information to local emergency response agencies during extreme weather. With a new generator, Knight says they are helping guarantee that the organization can continue its work during harsh weather conditions that could lead to electrical outages.
Christian County Emergency Management Weather Coordinator David Powell compared their current generator to one that would have been used during World War II and says it takes around five minutes to get started. Five minutes may feel like a short time, but if a tornado is on the ground, Powell says they could lose lives by not being able to share information and communicate with weather spotters…
