WARBIRDS WATCH: Wilson splits ‘doubleheader’ with Crawdads to start final homestand

With the Fayetteville Woodpeckers simply not giving an inch at the top of the standings, the Wilson Warbirds don’t have appear to have much of a chance of extending their first Single-A Carolina League season beyond this final homestand that began Tuesday, Aug. 25, at Wilson Ballpark with sort of a doubleheader split with the Hickory Crawdads.

The first game was the completion of a suspended game originally started in Hickory on July 19 that was halted by rain with the Warbirds ahead 6-0 in the first inning. Wilson went on to win that game 12-4 before falling 8-5 in the regularly-scheduled second game that was shortened to seven innings.

The split left the Warbirds 28-25 in the second half and five games behind North Division second-half leader Fayetteville with 12 games to play for Wilson, now 64-55 overall. Hickory, which has the best overall mark in the Carolina League at 72-47 is also a second-half best at 38-17…
