‘Zach lived boldly’: 16-year-old killed after fall from Devil’s Castle honored with scholarship fund

ALTA, Utah (ABC4) — The 16-year-old boy who lost his life after falling 100 feet while hiking Devil’s Castle Trail is being remembered for his effervescent zest for life.

Zachary Jacob Crandall passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 19 after a deadly fall from a hiking trail near Alta. According to a statement from loved ones, Zachary is remembered for the joy, generosity, and loyalty to others that he carried while he lived.

‘An adventurous spirit’

According to his obituary, Zachary was a vibrant piece of both his academic community and the rest of the world. He was heavily involved in athletics, serving as co-captain of the men’s volleyball team at Brighton High School, and had an adrenaline-seeking passion for Xtreme sports.

This adventurous spirit carried into other hobbies like parasailing, cliff jumping, freestyle trampoline, and difficult hikes.

He began as a roller-coaster enthusiast and evolved into a young man that lived with an intense sense of curiosity and a fervent desire to experience life to the fullest…
