What weather system is causing the severe storms in central New York?
An incoming cold front is bringing showers and thunderstorms to central New York today with the potential of a few turning severe. With the state fair in full swing, it’s important to keep the forecast in mind if you plan on being outdoors.
As of 4am this morning, scattered showers have developed across the western side of New York and are tracking eastward. This initial line of showers will produce light/moderate morning showers, but what develops behind it is what could become severe.
Rapid intensification of storms is possible after 12PM with the main timeframe for severe weather in Syracuse between 1PM-4PM.
After 4PM the severe weather threat shifts further eastward towards the Adirondacks and Mohawk River Valley.
The Storm Prediction Center has the majority of central New York draped under the slight chance of severe weather, or a level 2 out of 5. Although this seems relatively minor, we rarely see forecast outlook categories higher than this. So, this is something to take seriously…
