Three Shot on Springfield’s West Liberty Street, Gunman Still on the Loose

Gunfire tore through the 600 block of West Liberty Street in Springfield, Ohio, early Saturday morning, leaving three people shot and two of them hospitalized. No suspects had been identified as of Saturday afternoon, and investigators have not said what sparked the shooting.

The shooting happened at approximately 2:30 a.m., according to Cedar News, which reported that Clark County Sheriff’s Office representatives responded to the overnight emergency call. Two of the three people struck by gunfire were transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, according to WKEF, which first reported the incident citing a Clark County sergeant. WKEF said it would provide updates as more information becomes available, and as of Saturday afternoon, authorities had not identified any suspects.

Why Victims End Up in Dayton

Miami Valley Hospital is the only Level I Trauma Center verified by the American College of Surgeons in the region, offering round-the-clock specialized care for severe penetrating trauma across 17 counties spanning Southwest Ohio and East Indiana, according to Premier Health documents. The facility includes dedicated resuscitation suites and CareFlight air medical transport capabilities, which is why gunshot victims from Clark County are routinely sent there rather than treated locally.

That pattern has repeated itself in Springfield in recent months. A juvenile shot multiple times in the 1600 block of Cypress Street in July was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for emergency treatment, according to a Facebook post relaying WHIO.com reporting, and Springfield police asked the public for tips to help find that shooter. The Springfield Police Division maintains an anonymous email tip address, [email protected], along with a direct phone line at 937-324-7680, for anyone with information on open shooting cases.

A Street With a Violent Past

West Liberty Street is no stranger to gun violence. In February 2023, a shooting in the 300 block of the same street left a 53-year-old woman dead and a 29-year-old man hospitalized with a gunshot wound to his lower back, according to WHIO TV. Emergency responders determined at the time that the two victims were relatives…
