A 38-year-old Detroit man was arrested last Friday night after deputies say he drove drunk with children in his car straight through a secured perimeter around an active domestic violence standoff in Ypsilanti Township, ignoring commands before deputies used a tire deflation device to bring the vehicle to a stop.
The chaos unfolded around a scene that was already tense. According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, deputies had established a secured perimeter around 7:32 p.m. in the 1100 block of Harris Road after a 38-year-old man barricaded himself with two young children following an alleged domestic violence shooting attempt against his girlfriend. It was into that active, high-stakes standoff that an unrelated driver allegedly sped, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies say the driver showed signs of intoxication and had children of his own in the car when he blew past the caution tape and barricades, as reported by ClickOnDetroit. At 9:39 p.m., deputies deployed a tire deflation device to disable the vehicle, then carried out a high-risk traffic stop, taking the driver into custody after he failed to obey commands upon exiting the car, the sheriff’s office said.
