At farms across the region, cows know when they catch a whiff of brewers spent grain.
At any time of day or night, a farmer might pull up with a tractor-trailer loaded with barley mash — often literal tons of it — and, as one farmer put it, they’ll hear about it. At one farm raising Angus cattle, the grain is dumped into 1-ton feed tubs, carried across the pasture by a skid steer and met by a line of hungry cows that have come running.
