New evacuation orders for Timber and Plaskett fires near Big Sur

Two wildfires near the Big Sur coast continued to push north as warm and dry daytime conditions and afternoon winds elevated burning, fire officials said Saturday.

The Timber Fire near Highway 1 reached 24,839 acres as of Saturday night, and Cal Fire reported the Plaskett Fire grew to 8,241 acres after it was “very active” all day Friday.

The Plaskett Fire started Wednesday and was 0% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, while the Timber Fire has been burning since Aug. 8 and was 21% contained.

Dan Lerma, a fire behavior analyst with Cal Fire, said the Timber Fire continued to move up a ridge toward the Santa Lucia Mountain Range.
