Blount Mansion, the 1792 frame house that served as capital of the federal Southwest Territory, has a new roof. The Gov. William Blount Mansion Association used $60,000 transferred by the city, paired with a state grant, to install cedar roofing shakes on both the historic home and its outbuilding, restoring a period-accurate look to Knoxville’s only National Historic Landmark.
The city’s contribution came from its Historic Preservation and Façade Improvement Program, according to City of Knoxville – Government. In April, the Knoxville City Council authorized Mayor Indya Kincannon to execute documents transferring the $60,000 from that program to the mansion association specifically for the roof replacement, according to the City of Knoxville. That authorization came roughly four months before the city announced the completed cedar shake work.
