Kansas City’s HAIRitage Day Expected to Draw More Than 1,500 Kids to T-Mobile Center

More than 1,500 children and families were expected to participate in HAIRitage Day at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City on Saturday, a festival offering textured hair styling, a runway fashion show, and a day built around building kids’ confidence. The fourth annual event ran from noon to 4 p.m., with tickets starting at $10.

The event is organized by the Walker Foundation, founded by Tyrelle Walker and Aisha Walker, who spoke with KMBC about the impact the event has had on families across the Kansas City metro. The couple’s path to founding HAIRitage Day traces back to 2014, when Aisha’s mother experienced complete hair loss from alopecia — an experience that pushed Aisha and Tyrelle to start a wig-making business before eventually launching their non-profit, according to VoyageKC.

At the center of Saturday’s festival was the Walk of Confidence, a hair fashion show in which children attending HAIRitage Day modeled alongside more than 20 local community impact leaders. Those leaders included family court judges, police officers, and child welfare advocates, and the runway featured designs from more than 10 fashion designers, per the foundation’s own event announcement on Facebook. The pairing of kids with civic leaders brought children together with community figures on stage.

A Festival That Outgrew Its Original Footprint

This year’s edition hosted more than 60 local vendors, four live performances, and stations for massage and makeup services, alongside the free textured hair styling that anchors the day.
