$4.19M Project Brings Upgrades to Some Birmingham City Schools Athletic Courts

The Birmingham City Council approved two items Tuesday tied to the project, which calls for new outdoor courts at 14 schools and refreshes at existing courts.

The city has described the investment as covering 34 schools, with 20 receiving upgrades. However, the school district’s current list identifies 14 schools for new courts and 18 schools for court refreshes — a total of 32 schools. The district has not yet identified the remaining two campuses or explained the difference.

The work will use VersaCourt, a modular, snap-together tile surface commonly used for multipurpose sports courts. According to the district, each court will feature school colors and logos, as well as striping for basketball, other sports and playground games.
