CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM) — The U.S. Army is about to start its 9th year of disinterment operations at Carlisle Barracks Post Cemetery.
The bodies of Native American children are buried there after they died while attending the former Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which became the site of the Carlisle Barracks. The Army has been working to heal and bring closure to Native American families by identifying their remains and returning them to their tribes.
“It’s correcting a wrong of the past,” Office of Army Cemeteries Director Renae Yates said. “You know, in reality, (it) would have been nice if these children would have been able to go home and be buried by their loved ones. But we’re making it better for the future by doing this, so it’s very rewarding.”
