CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – It’ll still be pretty hot and humid for at least a few more days.

A Heat Advisory is in effect for portions of the TV9 viewing area along and south of Interstate 80. Most of these counties will be with this advisory through 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

We’re expecting heat index readings to be between 95 and 105 most days during the peak heating hours of the afternoon, between about 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The areas most likely to be in the triple-digits will be those in the advisory. Farther north, readings are more likely to be in the upper 90s.

With temperatures this hot, and especially for this long, the risk for heat-related illness is high if you don’t take precautions to help keep yourself safe. First and foremost, avoiding exposure to the heat as much as possible is the best course of action. Drink plenty of water to help keep yourself hydrated. Avoiding sugary, caffeinated, or alcoholic drinks can help in this endeavor, too. Wearing lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes will give your body a better chance at regulating its temperature. If you must be outdoors, make sure to take plenty of breaks in air-conditioned spaces.

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms below, you need to take action. You can combat heat exhaustion by immediately getting to an air-conditioned area and taking various steps to cool yourself off. If you or someone near you is showing signs of heat stroke, call 911 right away. It’s a life-threatening medical emergency and requires immediate care.

It’ll stay warm this evening, too. Heat index values stay around 95 to 100 early on, but quickly improve as the sun sets and into the night. It’ll be another muggy night, though, with lows in the low to mid 70s…
