Kalamazoo County supports public financing of affordable housing project in Oshtemo Twp

OSHTEMO TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Kalamazoo County commissioners voted Tuesday to help finance a 444-unit affordable housing and retail development planned for West Main Street in Oshtemo Township, clearing a hurdle for a project that has already been approved since 2024 but, earlier this year, faced a failed attempt to add-in a Kroger grocery store.

Detroit-based Ferlito Construction went before the county board of commissioners last month, on Aug. 18, asking for their support in funding the project using tax increment financing, or TIF, under Michigan’s Brownfield Redevelopment Financing Act.
