Little River Band’s iconic 1978 hit “Reminiscing” stands out not only as a chart-topping success but also as a beloved classic admired by music legends. The smooth yacht rock tune was reportedly a favorite of John Lennon and even earned high praise from Frank Sinatra, who called it the best song of the 1970s.
Released as the second single from their album Sleeper Catcher, “Reminiscing” climbed to number three on the Billboard Hot 100, marking the Australian group’s highest U.S. chart position. Its popularity was further cemented when Broadcast Music International recognized it for surpassing five million radio plays in America-a record for any Australian pop single at that time.
Guitarist Graeham Goble described the song as the band’s “pinnacle,” noting it has more than twice the listens of any other track in their catalog. It has been featured extensively in films and soundtracks over the years. Goble shared that Sinatra admired the song greatly, despite never recording it, and emphasized the significance of Lennon’s endorsement.
Intriguingly, Goble revealed that Lennon played “Reminiscing” repeatedly during his affair with May Pang. As she recounts in her memoir Loving John, the couple would lie in bed listening to the song on repeat, highlighting its emotional resonance.
The lyrics themselves evoke a nostalgic, romantic vibe, inspired by Goble’s affection for the musicals of the ’30s, ’40s, and ’50s-the black-and-white era of Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, and Rodgers and Hammerstein. Goble explained that growing up in Adelaide with a newfound television sparked his love for that classic American romantic era, which heavily influenced the song’s wistful tone.
The creation of “Reminiscing” came swiftly to Goble. While waiting for a TV appearance in Melbourne, fellow band member David Briggs introduced him to a jazz chord he hadn’t known before. That night, playing his Martin acoustic guitar, the melody and lyrics flowed naturally in just about thirty minutes, resulting in a sophisticated tune with key changes and jazz-inflected chords.
Despite some initial challenges in finding the right keyboardist for the recording, the band ultimately brought back Peter Jones, whose contribution helped the song fall perfectly into place. Guitarist Beeb Birtles added a syncopated riff in the final verse that gave the track an extra lift.
Nearly five decades later, “Reminiscing” remains a staple of soft rock playlists and continues to attract new listeners, boasting close to 200 million streams on Spotify alone-a testament to its timeless appeal and enduring charm.
