Sergio Galvez Perez, 38, and his 14-year-old daughter, Diana Galvez Ortega, have been located together in Mexico after spending a month evading authorities. Perez faces accusations of sexually abusing his daughter.
The case drew significant attention following the discovery of a deceased newborn along Struve Road in Monterey Bay, California, on August 1. The infant, referred to by investigators as “Baby Angelita,” was determined to be the biological child of Perez and Ortega. Evidence suggests that Ortega may have given birth to the baby at the roadside.
This tragic discovery prompted a nationwide search for Perez on charges including incest and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. An Amber Alert was issued for Ortega on September 6.
According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the two were last spotted on August 4 in Salinas, California, traveling in a white Nissan Altima without license plates. The vehicle was registered to Perez’s wife and Ortega’s mother, Ofelia Garcia Ortega, 36, who has been arrested and charged with child endangerment.
While there were initial reports that Ortega might face charges related to the infant’s death, the Monterey County District Attorney’s office clarified that no criminal filing request had been made against the 14-year-old. Ortega is being treated as a victim, with efforts focused on ensuring her safety and access to necessary support services.
Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto, who has led the investigation since August, worked alongside the FBI and Mexican authorities to locate the pair. She confirmed that Ortega is currently safe and in the care of local officials in Mexico.
Perez was apprehended after authorities found him in possession of narcotics. He now faces three felony charges in Monterey County Superior Court: lewd acts upon a minor, incest, and child abuse. The charges pertain to incidents occurring between November 2025, when Ortega was 13, and August 2026.
The exact location in Mexico where Perez and Ortega were found has not been disclosed. The Sheriff’s office plans to provide additional details during an upcoming news conference.
