Petition to update Ohio’s ‘Son of Sam’ law draws hundreds of thousands of signatures

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – Amid renewed public attention to a deadly Ohio car crash, an online petition is calling on lawmakers to modernize state law to prevent violent offenders from profiting off social media.

On July 31, 2022, Mackenzie Shirilla, who was 17 at the time, drove her car at 100 mph into a building in Strongsville near Cleveland. Her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, 20, and a mutual friend, Davion Flanagan, 19, died in the crash.

In 2023, Shirilla was convicted of 12 charges, including murder and felonious assault, after a bench trial. Prosecutors contended that the crash was intentional and tied to a toxic relationship between Shirilla and Russo. She maintains that she does not remember the incident but would not have intentionally harmed anyone…
