Texas Mom Faked Pregnancies Before Shocking Murder That Netflix Left Out

Additional Coverage:

Netflix’s documentary Maternal Instinct has brought renewed attention to the chilling case of Taylor Parker, a Texas mother who faked a pregnancy for nearly a year before murdering her pregnant friend, Reagan Simmons Hancock, and forcibly taking the unborn child to pass off as her own. While the film sheds light on this disturbing crime, it leaves out several significant details uncovered during the investigation and trial.

Taylor Parker, now 33, was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death, making her the youngest woman on Texas’s death row. However, court records reveal a troubling history of deception and criminal behavior that the documentary only briefly touches upon.

Notably, Parker had a pattern of faking pregnancies before the fatal incident. Prosecutors presented evidence that she falsely claimed to be pregnant multiple times, including during relationships with her ex-husband Hunter Parker and later with Wade Griffin. Griffin testified that Parker’s claims about expecting twins and other pregnancies were entirely fabricated, but her convincing nature led him to believe her.

The brutality of the crime was even more horrific than depicted on screen. Reagan suffered an astounding 113 sharp force injuries, including stab wounds and incised cuts, blunt trauma to her head and face, multiple skull fractures, and damage to her jugular vein.

Medical testimony described wounds deep enough to reach bone and indicated possible strangulation. Despite the severity, Reagan moved around the house while bleeding heavily before succumbing to her injuries.

During a lengthy hospital interview lasting around two hours, Parker insisted she was innocent and that the baby was hers. Investigators confronted her with evidence of premeditation and cold-blooded planning spanning eight months. Ultimately, Parker admitted confusion over her actions, claiming to have blacked out after being called a liar by Reagan.

The documentary features parts of the emotional 911 call from Reagan’s mother, Jessica Brookes, but the full recording played at trial reveals a raw and heartbreaking scene. Jessica’s anguished cries and desperate pleas for help paint a vivid picture of a family shattered by loss.

Adding to the tragedy, Reagan’s three-year-old daughter can be heard asking, “Where’s mommy?” during the call.

Wade Griffin, Parker’s former partner, spoke to the court about his shock at the extent of her deception. He described Parker as “very believable” and praised her ability to fabricate stories backed by forged documents. He also shared the profound personal toll the case took on him and his family, including damage to his reputation and the loss of his job.

Victim impact statements were deeply emotional. Reagan’s mother called Parker an “evil piece of flesh demon,” emphasizing the cruelty of the crime and the life taken from her daughter and unborn grandchild. Reagan’s sister tearfully recounted the lifelong void left by the loss, speaking of missed birthdays and the pain of visiting a grave instead of sharing memories.

Following the sentencing, the judge’s succinct order was to “Take her to death row,” where Parker remains today. While incarcerated, she has reportedly engaged in further misconduct, including attempts to manipulate other inmates and allegations of welfare fraud. Parker continues to appeal her conviction, arguing procedural issues and contesting the capital murder charge, but her appeals have not yet succeeded.

Currently one of seven women on death row in Texas, Taylor Parker’s execution date has not been scheduled. Maternal Instinct is available for streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a glimpse into a tragic and complex case that continues to raise difficult questions.
