KENT, Ohio — Three people were injured after an accidental chemical reaction occurred at the Akron Water Plant in Portage County, forcing a shelter-in-place order for surrounding businesses and residents in Franklin Township, according to the city of Akron.
Around 2 p.m., the Portage County HAZMAT team responded to the Akron Water Plant on Ravenna Road due to the situation. Officials are ordering residents and businesses within a half-mile radius around the Akron Water Plant to “Seek shelter indoors, close all windows and turn off HVAC units,” according to the Portage County Emergency Management Agency.
