I didn’t think the thing I’d still be telling people about months later would be the site of a reported miracle. Nor did I expect to feel such a lasting sense of peace after a single visit. That’s exactly what happened when I visited the Rhoda Wise House and Grotto in Canton, Ohio.
Tucked into a residential neighborhood, this hidden attraction in Ohio continues to draw visitors from across the country. Some arrive because of their Catholic faith. Others come because they’re interested in local history. Plenty simply want to see for themselves why thousands of people continue making the trip to this modest property nearly a century after Rhoda Wise first captured public attention.
The Story Behind This Hidden Attraction
When my Lyft driver dropped me off, neither of us was entirely convinced we were in the right place. The house looked exactly like what it is: a house. A modest home with a carefully maintained garden and an outbuilding nearby. Nothing about it screamed major destination. I rang the doorbell anyway.
A woman greeted me warmly, welcomed me inside, and asked whether I had visited before. Since I hadn’t, she suggested I watch a video explaining the history of Rhoda Wise and the events that made her home famous.
Rhoda Wise was a Canton resident who endured years of severe illness and multiple surgeries during the 1930s. According to accounts preserved by the shrine, she experienced apparitions of Jesus and St. Thérèse of Lisieux, often called “The Little Flower.” Wise later reported miraculous healings that physicians had considered impossible.
