Building on a 200-year family legacy

Continuing a family legacy at Maple Crest Farm, located at 6530 Miller Rd., has had its challenges in recent years for siblings Brant and Stacey Giere.

The farm will be the location of a fall festival Sept. 17-20, during which the bicentennial of the farm will be celebrated. The event will include food, live music, farm tours, open houses, pony rides and additional activities.

“It’s hard to imagine for me, as we get so consumed on a daily basis just with keeping the place functional and doing all the chores,” said Brant, a seventh-generation farmer on the site. “Looking back on my life here, it seems like the blink of an eye, and I’ve been here my whole life. I’ve seen big changes just within that period of time.”

The family’s history in Brecksville began in 1811 with the arrival of Lemuel Bourne from Massachusetts – the same year as the founding of Brecksville Township. Within a year’s time, Bourne constructed three log cabins. His son, Rawson Bourne, later built a framed house in 1826, along what is now Miller Road, establishing the farmstead…
